About SADFAW Ministry

This is a safe place.

That separation and divorce – and the abusive marriage before that – left you feeling raw. Lacking support and feeling hopeless.

Worst of ALONE. Isolated. Wondering if this emotional roller coaster will ever end? Curious to know how… and when… you will heal. Wanting to find peace.

Well, dear Sister, I am here to offer you my support.

DIVORCE IN AFRICA

I understand where your coming from. I know that Divorce is a big taboo word, in churches and in communities in Africa, especially for women in the patriarchal environment. And where you are at is painful…no words can describe it.

I can remember the trauma and sense of pain, fear, isolation, confusion, helplessness, anxiety, and oppression I experienced, as a woman going through a divorce in a patriarchal society, with barely any money and a handful of individuals to help or support me through the quagmire of emotions and legal jargon.

Having lived in the USA and England most of my adult life, I knew that things need to change the way in which most African black women are treated during such times: abusive.

What I believe as a Christian Woman

I believe you can leave an abusive marriage, without guilt.

I believe you can confidently move on with her life after.

I believe with the proper healing a woman can go from surviving to thriving after divorce.

I believe with an abundance of support, you will never feel alone.

I believe that any woman can rebuild a new life free from oppression… while reclaiming her hope, finding healing, and living in peace after divorce.

I believe that the shame of divorce doesn’t belong on the backs of the innocent victims in a divorce.

I know… through Christ, all can be redeemed.

Our Mission

To Bring Women Together & Help Them Navigate this Journey Spiritually and Emotionally and Bring them Hope for a Brighter Future

Our Mission

  1. To see women on the continent of Africa empowered during the journey of separation and divorce, going on to live happier more fulfilling lives with, lessons learned from the past
  2. To see the shame and stigma of separation and divorce that women experience broken in our African communities
  3. Women are better able to self-care for themselves, especially in intimate marital relationships

Purpose of Ministry

I started this ministry, to walk with other women, just like myself, who feel so very alone during and after divorce.

This is a place to journey to restoration and healing. A place to find hope and connection. A community of other women facing an unwanted divorce, together. We support each other as we start on this next chapter of life… after divorce.

I know God can heal, redeem, and restore your life… just like He did mine. I am here to help!

You can build your support system

Imagine finding the confidence and strength you never knew you had in you.

Imagine reclaiming the person you used to be, before the abuse and divorce.

Imagine knowing you are not walking alone because others have walked before you.

Imagine finding your authentic self. The person God created you to be.

Imagine having boundaries so you feel peace and respect, again.

Imagine your life reclaimed, restored, and redeemed through the healing power of Christ.

When you join this community of female survivors who are thriving, you will be mentored to build the confidence in yourself to cultivate healthy choices to reclaim your hope, find healing, and learn to live in peace, after divorce.

AMHFA is about providing mental health support for someone who is distressed or in a crisis.

It is also about breaking the stigma that surrounds mental health, and creating and maintaining a positive culture around well-being and mental health. In addition to this, it is also about building and mobilizing community help and support for helping those who are affected.

Participants get a deep understanding of what mental health is and what factors can affect general well-being. We teach practical skills to spot the signs of mental illness and give you the confidence to step in and support a person who may need assistance. Our comprehensive course provides learners with the skills, knowledge and qualification to become confident first-aiders for mental health.

It reduces the stigma that is often held around these conditions which could, without exaggeration, save someone’s life.

All those trained in our courses become a point of contact within workplaces, communities, churches, and schools to provide general advice, support and guidance. The support first aiders can give, and the signposting they can do will lead to an overall improvement in mental health.

PLEASE NOTE: These courses cover subjects that some people may find distressing, including suicide and self-harm. The participants can leave the course at any time if they feel overwhelmed

Suddenly everywhere I turned, women were telling me similar stories of being unknowingly involved in serial marriages, endless adulterous experiences, domestic violence, and other forms of abuse being thrown out of their homes, most with children, and living in poverty.

The stories were many. All of us were trying to cope the best we could, in an environment that was against us, including the church. We needed help.

I began a small group at home with the women who had been bright my way. And that is how this ministry began.

And everything has grown since that first group.

It was only through my Christain faith that I am where I am today. Healed and full of Hope. And you can too.

What this community is saying

“I first want to thank God for coming across your website. The sisterhood in the community has really helped me on this journey. It makes a big difference knowing that we understand the challenges of being a woman in Africa going through separation and divorce in a polygamous environment. I feel so much more strengthened. !”

“ I was ready to commit suicide...thank God for a friend of mine who knew of Shibero and the Beauty from Ashes program. If I had not gone to see her for life coaching and support from the community group, I wouldn’t be here today. Shibero and the community helped me work through issues that I had never talked out loud to anyone in my whole life before.

“I just finished the steps to starting over exercise and I have come back feeling hopeful, and with a new level of acceptance of my situation and what I need to do so that I can move forward. It's exciting and can't wait to start my new life.

MY STORY

This is my story. – You can read about it in the book ‘An African Woman’s Story of Divorce in Kenya’. You can find this in our bookshop.

In 2006, I was legally separated, followed by the final divorce in 2015, after 18 years of marriage, and I did not do well with that.  I had been married to a narcissist who was determined to kill my spirit and self-esteem.

During the separation and divorce, needless to say – in a patriarchal society, I went from abuse to abuse, and from anger to despair to feeling totally overwhelmed and traumatized by almost being killed by ex-husband, the local authority’s corruption, the church’s reaction to my separation, sexually harassment by one of the lawyers – I went through eight lawyers! lack of money, depression…the list is endless. I went through every negative emotion imaginable. My heart was truly broken by the pain of divorce
